Our vision: clean, emission-free
inland shipping

Zero Emission Services:

all-in concept for emission-free inland shipping

Exchangeable energy containers (ZESpacks)
State of the art technology in a standard 20ft container and charged with green electricity. Future-proof: it currently uses lithium-ion batteries, but can be easily converted to other energy carriers like hydrogen.
Charging infrastructure

Strategic charging points are located throughout the Netherlands where skippers can quickly exchange ZESpacks. Charging stations can also serve as Energy Hubs, which can charge other modalities or provide energy to stabilise the electricity grid.

Pay-per-Use

ZES has developed a simple payment system based on pay-per-use: the customer pays for the renewable electricity consumed and a rental fee for the ZESpack. This keeps the operating costs competitive and simplifies the transition to emission-free shipping.

Happening now

We’re sailing! The Alphenaar is the first Dutch inland vessel to use interchangeable energy containers for propulsion: ZESpacks. The Alphenaar sails with two ZESpacks on board between Alphen aan den Rijn and Moerdijk and can be loaded and exchanged at the first charging station at the CCT terminal in Alphen aan den Rijn.

Six ZES benefits
listed

No emissions: ZES saves 1,000 tons of CO2, 7 tons of NOx per ship per year and does not produce particulate matter or noise.

Quickly charged and exchanged: the charging of the battery does not involve charging of the ship. This optimises the logistics for the shipper.

Affordable: pay per use, no uncertain investment for skippers.

Future-proof: In time, other energy carriers, like hydrogen, could be used in the ZESpacks.

Open Access: multiple providers and modalities can use the ZESpacks and charging stations.

Scalable: ZES is an all-in solution and thus eminently scalable.

Powering clean corridors.

ZES provides a total solution for emission-free sailing with an open access infrastructure: interchangeable battery containers charged with renewable power, charging stations, technical support and an innovative pay per use-based payment concept.
